Because I’m about to share with you my story about my PS3 blinking red light – the goods, the bads, and the uglies – and finally the one thing that helped me get rid of the PS3 blinking red light once and for all.

A few months ago I woke up early one Saturday morning to enjoy some quality PS3 gaming time. This was part of my weekly ritual. I go to power up my console as I had done dozens of times before, only this time after it seems to be powering up for a few seconds it just quits and I’m left with flashing red lights. I got in touch with Sony and was told I had to cover the shipping fees to send it to them. After looking into shipping costs I found out that from where I lived it was going to cost me more than $75 to ship the dang thing to Sony. By this time my frustration levels were at an all-time high. I had invested hundreds of dollars into my PS3 plus hundreds of dollars more into games, and it was my favorite Saturday morning activity!  The ps3 blinking red light was making me even more frustrated.

I debated simply buying a new PS3, except there was one argument that I could not get around: how do I know this same thing wouldn’t just happen again, or in other words how do I know I won’t just get the ps3 blinking red light again?  So I decided to start researching how to fix a PS3 myself online. After hours of reading forums and blogs I had found nothing that would help, only more people complaining about the PlayStation 3 blinking lights and being told that I had 2 options: get a new one or send it to Sony.

Being the persistent guy that I am, I started looking into local stores that did repairs on electronics. After being told by several different vendors that they wouldn’t touch it for fear of liability issues I found a guy who said he was both able and willing to fix the ps3 blinking red light, but that he wouldn’t be able to get to it for at least 4 weeks because he was so backed up with other jobs and clients. I was quite surprised at how simplistic and easy to understand the guide was. I read through the guide and decided that I could absolutely follow its instructions and fix my ps3 blinking red light. Now, the guide has you take the console apart down to the bare bones and if I’m being completely candid with you it was a little nerve racking. After completing the PS3 repairs, however, all by myself, in less than an hour and a half, using nothing but a screwdriver, I specifically remember thinking to myself “That’s it?”

I anxiously setup my playstation, plugged in all the cords and braced myself for the verdict. It fired right up as if nothing had ever happened and best of all, the PS3 blinking red light was gone!!! After personally using this guide I wanted to provide you with a more in depth explanation as to what this guide is as well as look into whether or not its claims really are possible.

Is Your Hard Drive Causing the PS3 Blinking Red Light?

If you are experiencing the ps3 blinking red light then you know that it is extremely frustrating, and not knowing the cause or how to fix the ps3 flashing red light is the most frustrating thing about it.  There are a lot of things that can cause the flashing red light on ps3 and in this article we will discuss how you can quickly and easily determine if the playstation 3 blinking red light is being cause by your playstation’s hard drive.

Safety Precautions

As with any electronics containing hard drives, never allow the device to be dropped or bumped as these things can easily damage (often permanently) a hard drive.  Also, any time you are handling a hard drive rubber gloves are suggested and always hold the device by the edges.  Hard drives are very sensitive to static electricity and the tiniest of sparks or shocks can also damage a hard drive.  Any time you are dealing with the insides of any electronics, always make sure the device is powered down properly and unplugged.  Finally, avoiding damage to your hard drive is very important indeed, second only to avoiding injury to yourself.  Take your time and take any necessary precautions.  Believe me when I tell you that replacing your hard drive will be much less expensive and time consuming than a trip to the hospital.

How to Determine if Your Hard Drive is the Problem

In order to determine whether or not it is the hard drive causing the playstation 3 flashing red light, you must remove the hard drive.  If you power your playstation 3 on with the hard drive removed and you no longer see the ps3 red blinking light then you know that the hard drive is the culprit.  If when the hard drive is removed you power your ps3 on and you still notice the ps3 red light of death, then you know that the hard drive is not the culprit.  Now, it is conceivable that there are multiple culprits causing the ps3 red lights.  In other words, if you have a problem with your hard drive as well as with your power supply, both could be causing blinking red lights on your ps3.  Chances of there being multiple culprits are very, very slim.  Be certain of one of the causes, repair it, and if you still have the red lights narrow down the problem again.

After You Are Certain the Hard Drive is the Problem

If you have determined that the hard drive is the problem, then you know that your hard drive is either:

  1. Faulty / broken
  2. Corrupted
  3. Hasn’t been formatted properly (if you’ve installed a new hard drive)

If you’re hard drive is broken, it needs to be replaced.  There are a number of places you can get a new hard drive and my recommendation would be Ebay.  You can find quality products for pretty inexpensive there.  Just be sure that you get the proper drive for your PS3 (20GB, 40GB, 60GB, 80GB, etc.).

If your hard drive has been corrupted, you can restart the system, restore system settings back to default, restore system files, rebuild the database (operating system), or perform a system update.   These are all simple processes that the ps3 itself will walk you through step by step in order to help you fix ps3 red light.

If you have installed a new hard drive without properly formatting it first, you must do so.  This is done by removing the hard drive and plugging it into a pc (with an internet connection) and you must then format the hard drive to FAT32, then put the hard drive back into the ps3 console.

If you are experiencing a PS3 blinking red light or blinking yellow light (also know as the red or yellow light of death) then you’ve probably realized that the PS3 isn’t likely to fix itself. You have 4 options. Throw it away and forget you ever had one. Buy a brand new PS3. Pay somebody else (the manufacturer) to fix it. Fix it yourself.

If you are married then your wife will probably like the option of throwing away your PS3 and forgetting you ever had one the best. This is likely the option you will like the least however, particularly if you enjoy your PS3 regularly and have invested lots of money and time into games.

You can buy a brand new PS3. This of course is an issue of money. They are easy to get so you won’t have trouble finding one. The cost of a new one is substantial, plus transferring your data (provided you’ve backed it up) can be a bit of a hassle, though absolutely feasible and you will no longer be haunted by a PS3 blinking red light.

You can send your PS3 off to the manufacturer to get the PlayStation repairs done. Bearing in mind that you’ve got to pay to ship it and that you will be charged anywhere from $200-$300 or more for the actual repairs, it may just be cheaper to buy a brand new one. You are also 100% at the mercy of the manufacturer. It could be 2 or 3 weeks before they even look at it. After they’ve looked at it you might be looking at another 3 to 5 weeks for parts, then another 2 to 4 weeks for the repairs and shipping. You could easily be without your PS3 for 3 months or longer. Be careful sending it to somebody other than the manufacturer to make PlayStation 3 repairs. With the manufacturer at least they know how to fix a PS3.

PS3 Blinking Red Light – Ways to Avoid It

Also known as the PS3 red light of death (RLOD), blinking red lights mean that you cannot use your PlayStation and it also means that the problem won’t just fix itself. Note – On some rare occasions the flashing red lights will go away if you:
1. Make sure there aren’t any lose cables, and then restart your PS3.
2. With the exception of the power cord (leave the power cord as is) undo all of the other cables and then try plugging them back in.

Getting the ps3 blinking red light is extremely frustrating to say the least, there are however specific measures you can take to avoid ever seeing the PS3 red light of death in the first place. These measures are very simple and I would highly suggest you follow them. Plugging your PS3 (as well as any expensive electronic device) into a surge protector will ensure that your PS3 won’t overheat or flat out get fried in the event of a short, a bad plug, or a power surge, all of which can lead to a ps3 blinking red light.

Keep your PS3 in an open and well ventilated area. If your PS3 is kept in a tight and enclosed area during use it will be much more susceptible to overheating.
